Workplace Transport
The Workplace Transport Subcommittee of the Northern Ireland Safety Group (NISG) helps keep workplace transport safety firmly on the agenda by promoting good practice and raising awareness of common risks across a wide range of industries.
Workplace transport includes everyday activities such as vehicle movements, pedestrians working alongside vehicles, loading and unloading, and managing traffic routes around sites. When these activities are not properly managed, they can lead to serious injuries. The Subcommittee’s purpose is to support improved knowledge, understanding and competence in workplace transport safety, helping organisations recognise risks and think about them in a practical and proportionate way.
The Subcommittee focuses on sharing learning, encouraging improvement and promoting high standards, rather than giving advice or enforcing rules. The Workplace Transport Subcommittee provides a forum where members, safety professionals and partner organisations can come together to learn from each other, explore common challenges and help raise standards through collective experience.
The Subcommittee supports this work by:
- Promoting the importance of workplace transport safety, helping keep it visible and relevant for organisations of all sizes
- Providing opportunities for learning and education, including events, seminars and shared resources that support improved competence
- Sharing information and key messages on workplace transport safety, including distributing and signposting relevant material from HSENI and other bodies
- Using different communication methods, such as regular eāzines, guidance material and other media, to reach and engage members
- Working in partnership with other companies, organisations and bodies to support learning and raise the profile of good workplace transport health and safety
- Keeping under review emerging risks and new technology, helping members stay informed as workplaces and transport activities continue to evolve.
The Subcommittee meets regularly to review opportunities, ensure activities remain relevant to members’ needs, and to link with other NISG subcommittees where appropriate. It also reports into the NISG Executive Committee, ensuring workplace transport remains a key part of NISG’s wider work to improve health and safety across Northern Ireland.
By encouraging shared knowledge, encouraging cooperation and promoting sensible approaches to risk management, the Workplace Transport Subcommittee supports members in taking practical steps towards safer workplaces and healthier working environments for everyone.
