About NISG
Backdrop
All of us strive for the same goal: to make sure no one gets injured or ill at work. But how do we turn this goal into a set of actions that makes sure we achieve it?
Our belief is that people can only make positive contributions to health and safety if they are informed, educated, and competent. Our programme of events and activities is tailored to meeting this goal.
Whether it is activities which outline current thinking, events that demonstrate best practice or information on the latest health and safety legislation and guidance, our mission is to provide relevant health and safety information signposting in the most accessible manner possible and we’ve been doing this for over 70 years.
History
In 1953 six forward thinking manufacturing companies came together to form what is now Northern Ireland Safety Group. Those six companies envisaged a workplace were injury and death wasn’t the price for doing business. They felt that incident and accident prevention could only be improved by the promotion of good practice. 70+ years later our mission remains the same by providing information, education and promotion.
The founding companies were
Courtalds Ltd;
Short Bros & Harland;
Harland & Wolff;
Gallaher Ltd;
Scribbans Kemp and
Musgrave Engineering.

The Present day
Run by a dedicated committee of volunteers (all of whom are safety professionals) our mission as an organisation is to promote occupational safety and health.
National Irish Safety Organisation
NISG are the sister organisation to NISO in the Republic of Ireland and the two organisations have a very close working relationship which brings together membership from right across the whole of Ireland, connecting organisations and their H&S employees and spreading the positive health and safety message.
The two organisations works closely together to organise the All-Ireland Safety Awards and the All-Ireland Safety Quiz each year, which showcase the best from both organisation’s membership.
The All-Ireland Safety Awards welcomes entries from both NISO and NISG member organisations and carries out a rigorous assessment process by independent adjudicators. The benefits and recognition of the Awards scheme within both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland has resulted in150 organisations entering the Awards scheme year on year.
The All-Ireland Safety Quiz pits the winning teams from each of the NISO regions plus the winning teams from Northern Ireland, in both Novice and Previous Entrant categories, in a Quiz Final competition which offers both Health and Safety learning and teambuilding opportunity and brings the teams to a location in the middle of Ireland for a Saturday afternoon competition and a Saturday evening meal and awards ceremony. There is great pride in attending for the teams, who are not in full time health and safety roles, but who take the time to study and prepare for the competition each year.
We look forward to hearing from you.
