Education
Education is a vital part of the requirements of the NISG Constitution and our primary objective as a Charity is to promote the health and safety of all persons in the workplace. We do this by ensuring we provide education via many of our subcommittee activities. We also actively promote health and safety at work to young people, who have not yet entered the workforce, but who are likely to commence work experience, are due to embark on apprenticeships or take up college / university places.
It is vital that young people understand what to expect on entering the working world and over the years, we have provided many Schools Seminars to teenagers to give an insight into health and safety at work. Today students get some education in health and safety as part of the school curriculum, for example, Year 8 Technology classes now include teaching on safety features like emergency stop buttons and safety signage before pupils start to create projects
NISG School Seminars include topics such as The Cost of Accidents; Electricity at Work and The Use of PPE. They are hands-on sessions and normally a practical “Design a Safety” poster is included to get creative minds working.
Feedback is always positive, and we firmly believe these seminars are of the upmost importance to our young people. It is not easy for teachers to find time to hold a School Seminar, but when they do, benefits can easily be seen in the practical knowledge the students take away on the day.
Our NI Primary School children are also catered for at NISG with “Safety Sam” talks by our Executive Committee members to children in schools close to construction sites. NISG began running these talks in 2009. Featuring a road cone called Safety Sam who takes the kids on a journey through the dangers of playing near, or on construction sites and each letter of SAFETY SAM stands for a hazard.
If you have a contact at a Primary or Secondary School in Northern Ireland who would like to avail of either of these initiatives, please contact us at NISG and we are happy to follow up and arrange to present to the school at a suitable time – engaging our young people will only help to spread the health and safety message in years to come.
