Staff 'unhappier as jobs lost'
Workers are getting more and more unhappy as jobs continue to be lost and pay rises are "few and far between", a report concludes.
Recruitment firm Badenoch & Clark found in their Happiness at Work Index that only a third of workers were happy in their jobs and a quarter were "distinctly unhappy", with employee happiness falling steadily so far in 2011.
Longer hours, rising financial strain at the workplace and at home and top management being reticent over investing in more talent were among the reasons for fluctuation in workplace happiness during the year, said Badenoch & Clark's managing director Nicola Linkleter.
Lack of tangible job security was another factor, she added, saying happiness at work was "remarkably low and must be dealt with as a priority issue."
Organisations may lose talent unless they create a working environment where staff can develop a sense that their work is valuable and valued, she said.
