Council boss offered safety helmet says: 'I don't do hats'

A council leader was criticised today after refusing to wear a hard hat on a building site.

Bromley Tory Stephen Carr, pictured, was inspecting progress on The Pavilion leisure centre revamp but when handed safety gear said: "I don't do hats."

Others on the tour, including councillors and centre management, wore theirs. Opposition Lib-Dem councillor John Canvin said: "Stephen Carr should be leading by example.

Perhaps he has a big head." Mr Carr said it was his choice, adding: "This ridiculous march of health and safety regulations has gone beyond a joke."
