Collaborative Construction Webinar on mental health

6 construction groups - CIOB, BuildHealth, the Lighthouse Construction charity, the FMB, BMHA and NI Safety Group (who hosted the webinar) - joined forces to highlight the prevalence of poor mental health in the industry and the services that are available to support workers affected.

The webinar was called ‘Health Inside the Helmet’ and began with Gavin McGuire of FMB outlining how the industry with its demanding schedules, high-pressure environments, and physically demanding tasks, poses unique challenges to the mental health of its workforce. Ernie Spence, representing BMHA, presented on the Signposting Service which gives users quick access to support using a QR code. Then Natalie Ryan from the Lighthouse Construction Charity then spoke about services they have available to support workers.

In closing the session, webinar Chair, Yvonne Conway of CIOB/Woodvale Construction thanked the speakers and outlined three key takeaways:-

• Do have a chat with a colleague if you have concerns.
• Do request the QR code from BMHA and inform your workers about it.
• Do spread the word about the support available especially for small businesses.
