April 2022 sees the Plastic Packaging Tax coming into effect

The Plastic Packaging Tax is in effect from April 2022 (see here), and businesses need to start getting ready now by keeping records of the packaging they manufacture or import. Any business that manufactures or imports 10 or more tonnes of plastic packaging over a 12-month period will need to register for the tax. This includes importers of packaging which already contains goods, such as plastic bottles filled with drinks (though the tax only applies to the packaging, not the goods).

Businesses that need to register for the tax will pay Plastic Packaging Tax on any packaging that contains less than 30% recycled plastic.
