American Medical Association recognises health risks of prolonged sitting
The American Medical Association has officially recognised the health risks of prolonged sitting, particularly at work.
At its annual meeting on 18 June, it voted to adopt a new policy on the health risks of prolonged sitting.
The policy recognises prolonged sitting as an emerging public health issue and encourages employers, employees and others to introduce alternatives to sitting such as standing work stations and isometric balls.
The policy also encourages education on ways to minimise the risk.
“Prolonged sitting, particularly in work settings, can cause health problems and encouraging workplaces to offer employees alternatives to sitting all day will help to create a healthier workforce,” said AMA board member Dr Patrice Harris.
