Why enter the John Gordon Award
In 2015 William Dill nominated an engineer for the John Gordon Safety Person of the year Award. His nominee went on to win and William has kindly listed what he (as the safety professional) saw as the benefits of entering.
Below is the text listed from William's email.
"Individual Benefits"
- Gave recognition where it was due. News of the award was discussed throughout the company right up to Board Level.
- Enhanced the nominee's confidence in front of his colleagues and within his role.
- Clearly showed that good efforts and good practice gains good recognition and can make a difference.
- The Engineer talked of the pride he felt when telling his family.
"Colleagues Benefits"
- Great for competitive spirit. His team felt proud of their colleague and felt they gained positive attention above other teams in the organisation.
- Assisted with raising moral.
- Enhanced the team's bond with the organisation.
- Set a very positive good practice example to other colleagues.
- It also gave the team plenty of ammunition against the nominee, and I have to say the Engineer in question did take a lot of stick, but he was well up for it.
"Benefits for the organisation"
- Positive publicity (internal as well as external).
- Demonstrated that good efforts are recognised.
- The Award displayed in reception is a positive talking point for all who see it."
"The benefits far outweigh any negatives and I would certainly encourage anyone who is thinking of making a submission to do so. I got big results from the little time it took to enter".
