LETTER RECEIVED FROM MENINGITIS TRUST

I am writing on behalf of the Meningitis Trust to thank the Northern Ireland Safety Group (an organisation that promotes occupational health and safety) for choosing us as their nominated Charity for the proceeds of a ballot held at their annual Safety Quiz

The event at the Wellington Park Hotel in Belfast raised a huge £460. The Safety Group chose to donate the proceeds from the ballot to the Meningitis Trust after a member’s mother contracted the disease a year ago. The money raised will be used to provide practical and emotional support to families and individuals across Northern Ireland, whose lives have been shattered by meningitis. We offer support to anyone who has been affected by the impact of the disease, through a range of support services; including counselling, financial grants and a freephone 24-hour nurse-led helpline.

We are reliant on voluntary donations from individuals, companies and organisations to continue our vital work in the community. The kind donation from Northern Ireland Safety Group is invaluable to us.

A recent survey indicated that as many as 13,900 people living in Northern Ireland today have had either viral or bacterial meningitis. That means that in a city the size of Belfast, around 2,210 residents will have had some form of meningitis, and every year, there will, on average, be another 40 cases. These figures show that our ongoing work is much-needed.
