Safety Quiz a big success

Saftey Quiz
‘Ian Morrow from the Railway Sleepers receiving the trophy for Previous Entrants’

The Northern Ireland Safety Group (NISG) held its Annual Safety Quiz at the Wellington Park Hotel Belfast on Friday 19th January 2006. Teams representing large and small organisations throughout Northern Ireland competed for the coveted title of ‘Northern Ireland Safety Quiz Champions’. The evening took the format of a table quiz and was designed to test health and safety knowledge of those participants in a competitive but social environment.

There were two levels of entry category, ‘Previous Entrants’ and ‘New Entrants’.  Competition was tight but the Railway Sleepers from Translink won the Previous Entrant Category. In the new entrants category Schrader Electronics were the victors.  Both of the winning teams will now go forward and represent Northern Ireland in the all Ireland Finals which are to be held in Tullamore, Co Offaly on 24th March 2007.

What's all the Noise About?

The Northern Ireland Safety Group held an extremely successful seminar at the King’s Hall in Belfast.  The subject was Noise and Vibration and we were delighted that a range of experts were able to join us and pass on valuable advice to NISG members – nearly 100 were in attendance.

Dr David Smeatham (Noise & Vibration Specialist Inspector HSE) gave a detailed presentation on the control of vibration at work. He began by talking about hand-arm vibration, explained what it was, who was at risk and the Regulations. This was followed by practical points on how to do a risk assessment and where to get realistic vibration data. The hierarchy of control was discussed from elimination to information, instruction and training. Dr Smeatham finished his presentation by looking at whole body vibration.

In his second presentation Dr Smeatham discussed the control of noise at work. He began by talking about noise induced hearing loss. The Control of Noise at Work Regulations were outlined and the key messages that came from it. Again he spoke about risk assessment and discussed the best machine for the job concept, engineering control, noise barriers and noise enclosure. The requirements for hearing protection were outlined with good practice and caution discussed. In his summary Dr Smeatham touch again on the new regulations, the emphasis on control, the justification for the new regulations and how HSE were working closely with industry.

Gallahers runners up in All Ireland Quiz
Congratulations to Gallahers who were runners up in the All Ireland Health and Safety Quiz held in Tullmaore in May.  Following their victories in the Northern Ireland Quiz, 'Only Smarties have the Answers' from Gallahers and 'The Railway Sleepers' from Translink, travelled to Tullamore for the grand final.  Both teams acquitted themselves extremely well and Gallahers reached the final where they were sadly beaten by Janssen Pharmaceutical Ltd.  The Railway Sleepers also did extremely well and reached the semi final of the 'novice' category - well done to both teams!!
